THE TRAINING GROUND
The West Algarve is where the Algarve's cycling reputation was built. The coastline runs west from Lagos and Portimão through the cliff villages of Burgau and Salema to Sagres and the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente — the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe. Behind the coast, the Serra de Monchique rises to 902m at the Foia summit, the highest point in the Algarve and the climb that defines winter training camps across the region. The roads are quiet, well-surfaced, and varied enough to fill two weeks without repeating a line. Northern European cycling groups have been coming here in February and March for decades — drawn by the same combination of reliable sun, low traffic, and terrain that is genuinely worth travelling for. This is where serious cyclists come when the riding is the reason they are here.

SERRA TO SEA
The Central Algarve stretches from the Serra de Monchique and the Arade valley in the west to the pine forest estates of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo in the east. Between those two points sits the limestone interior plateau above Loulé with its Volta ao Algarve stage climbs, the whitewashed village of Alte with the Wall above it, the Ria Formosa lagoon running alongside the coast road east of Faro, the Silves Moorish castle at the end of the Arade valley road, and the Falésia clifftop above the central coast. No other region in the Algarve offers this range. Riders based anywhere from Monchique to Carvoeiro to Albufeira are in the Central Algarve, and the riding changes character significantly depending on which part of it you are in. Mountain roads, interior climbs, lagoon corridors, and resort estate roads — all within the same geographic region.

THE QUIET CORNER
The East Algarve runs from the Ria Formosa lagoon coast at Olhão and Tavira north through the orange groves of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo into the limestone interior above São Brás de Alportel, and further north through the Serra Sotavento to the border village of Alcoutim where the Guadiana river marks the frontier with Spain. The roads carry almost no traffic and the landscape has not been touched by the resort development that defines the coast further west. The villages are older, the countryside is quieter, and the cycling has a character that is entirely its own — nothing like the Serra de Monchique, nothing like the resort corridor, nothing like anywhere else in Portugal. Most cyclists who come to the Algarve never ride east of Faro. The ones who do consistently say it is the part of the region they wish they had found sooner.
