Luz sits on the Atlantic cliff coast midway between Lagos and Burgau — a compact resort village above its own beach with the cliff road running east to Lagos and west toward Sagres from the door. The three Volta Circuit routes cover the full western Algarve from here. The cliff road west through Burgau and Salema toward Cabo de São Vicente is the signature coastal day. The Foia summit road heads north from Lagos, 5km east of Luz, on the same road the Volta ao Algarve peloton climbs every February. And Both Sides of the Serra combines both approaches to the summit in a single day with no repeated roads.

North from Lagos through Bensafrim on quieter inland roads, then southwest to Vila do Bispo and Sagres on roads that carry considerably less traffic than the N125 coastal corridor. From Sagres the road heads west to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente — the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, with cliffs dropping 75m into the Atlantic. The return runs east on the cliff-top coastal road through Salema, Burgau, and Luz. The route puts the wind at your back on the way home.

North from Lagos through Portimão and up the Arade valley foothills to Monchique, then the 16km summit climb to Foia at 902m. The Volta ao Algarve professional race uses this road as a decisive stage. The main climb from Monchique town averages 4.9% with sections above 11%. On a clear day from the summit you can see both coastlines. Return via Caldas de Monchique or descend directly to Portimão. Start early and you are back at the hotel before the midday heat.

Ascend to the Foia summit via the Portimão road, then descend via the Alferce variant — a completely different technical challenge through eucalyptus forest and small farms. The Alferce descent is faster and more demanding than the ascent, requiring focused handling before the valley opens back toward the coast. The most complete Volta Circuit day for riders who want to experience the serra from both sides without repeating a single stretch of road.

I ride through Luz regularly on the coastal routes. The bay below the village is one of the more sheltered spots on the western coast and the road west to Burgau is a proper warm-up before the cliff climbing starts. The approach to Foia from Luz via Lagos takes you through the Bensafrim valley on roads that are genuinely quiet — one of those approaches where the climbing feels earned before you have even started the summit road.

Yes — the cliff road west from Luz runs through Burgau and Salema toward Vila do Bispo and Sagres. The Wild West Coast routes are all accessible from Luz with a short coastal approach. Lighthouse to Lagos is particularly well-suited to a Luz base as the cliff coast section runs right from the door.
