Alte has its own three standalone routes — none shared with another city — because the riding here is genuinely distinct from anything on the central coast. The Wall of Alte and Malhão Summit circuit is the definitive Barrocal Interior day: out of the village on the 2km Wall at 7.4%, up to the Malhão plateau above 500m, and back via a different barrocal line. The Silves barrocal interior route heads west through São Bartolomeu de Messines to the Moorish capital on quiet roads through cork oak and citrus — the natural long day from Alte with the castle as the turnaround. And the Germano Loop around Paderne and back is the local circuit — start and end at the café, consistently rolling barrocal terrain on quiet asphalt, the natural base loop for a week in the Barrocal Interior.
Moderate · 65km · 1,500m+ · 3-4 hrs
The Wall and the Plateau starts immediately above Alte — no flat approach, no coastal transfer. The Wall of Alte is a 2km ramp at 7.4% that begins from the village itself, followed by the longer Malhão climb to above 500m. The loop through the limestone interior returns to Alte on different roads before finishing at Germano BiciArte. 65km, 1,500m. In summer, start before 7am — Alte heats up quickly and the upper sections of both climbs are exposed and unforgiving in midday heat.
Moderate · 65km · 650m · 3-4 hrs
West to the Moorish Capital takes the quiet limestone interior roads from Alte to Silves — the Algarve former Moorish capital, where the red sandstone castle above the old town is visible from kilometres away. The roads between the two towns carry almost no traffic and the surface is consistently good throughout. Stop at the market in Silves before the return east to Alte and Germano BiciArte. 65km, 650m. In summer start early — the limestone interior heats up quickly after 9am.
Challenging · 1000km · 1,900m · 4-5 hrs
The Home Circuit is the hardest day in the Alte set. South from Alte to Paderne, east to the Freguesia de Querença, then north into the serras where the elevation accumulates seriously on legs already carrying significant distance. Refill bottles at the 50km mark — no services in the hills before Salir. Return south through Salir to Alte and Germano BiciArte. 100km, 1,900m. In summer a pre-dawn start is not optional. The serras in midday heat on a 100km effort is a different proposition entirely.

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE
I bring riders to Alte when they want to understand what the barrocal interior actually is. The Wall of Alte is the opening statement every morning, and the Malhão plateau above it is the full sentence. The Germano Bike Café has become a reference point on this circuit for good reason: it is where riders regroup before and after the climbs. The roads in every direction from Alte are quiet, well-surfaced, and demanding limestone interior riding. If you want to train seriously in this corner of the Algarve, there is nowhere better positioned.
