Cycling in Alte – Routes, Terrain, and What to Expect

Alte has its own three standalone routes — none shared with another city — because the riding here is genuinely distinct from anything on the central coast. The Wall of Alte and Malhão Summit circuit is the definitive Barrocal Interior day: out of the village on the 2km Wall at 7.4%, up to the Malhão plateau above 500m, and back via a different barrocal line. The Silves barrocal interior route heads west through São Bartolomeu de Messines to the Moorish capital on quiet roads through cork oak and citrus — the natural long day from Alte with the castle as the turnaround. And the Germano Loop around Paderne and back is the local circuit — start and end at the café, consistently rolling barrocal terrain on quiet asphalt, the natural base loop for a week in the Barrocal Interior.

The Wall and the Plateau
(Alte, Malhão Summit, Barrocal Hills)

Challenging · 70km · 1,200m+ · 4 hrs

Out of the village and straight up the Wall of Alte — a 2km ramp averaging 7.4% — then on to the Malhão summit plateau above 500m via the longer upper climb. Return via a different line through the limestone interior. The Wall is the benchmark that most riders do on their first morning in Alte to gauge where their legs are. The Malhão plateau gives wide views across the central Algarve before the descent back through the interior. The definitive Alte Circuit day — start at the Germano Café and finish at the Germano Café.

West to the Moorish Capital
(Silves, Barrocal, Alte)

Moderate · 80km · 800m · 4 hrs

West from Alte through the interior toward São Bartolomeu de Messines and down to Silves on quiet roads through cork oak and citrus groves. The Moorish castle and the old town make a natural turnaround point before the return climb back into the interior. The road from Alte west is among the quietest in the central Algarve — smooth asphalt, almost no traffic, and consistently interesting countryside throughout. The return climb brings you back up through the limestone interior with the altitude making the final section noticeably more demanding.

The Home Circuit
(Germano Café, Alte, Barrocal Loop)

Moderate · 55km · 650m · 3 hrs

The local base loop — a circuit linking Alte with Paderne on the best of the surrounding interior roads. Start and end at the Germano Bike Café. Consistently rolling terrain on quiet asphalt with the Paderne castle ruins as the natural mid-ride landmark. This is the route most riders do on their first morning in Alte to shake out the legs before the bigger days, and on their last morning as a closer. The most accessible of the three Alte Circuit routes and the one that best captures the character of riding in this corner of the Algarve.

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE

Alte is the Alte Circuit — a single village in the limestone interior that most visitors see from a car window on the way to somewhere else. Cyclists who know the Algarve properly know Alte differently: the Wall of Alte is a 2km ramp at 7.4% that starts immediately above the village, the Malhão plateau sits above 500m at the end of the day's hardest road, and the Germano Bike Café is the reference point for the central Algarve barrocal circuit.

I bring riders to Alte when they want to understand what the barrocal interior actually is. The Wall of Alte is the opening statement every morning, and the Malhão plateau above it is the full sentence. The Germano Bike Café has become a reference point on this circuit for good reason: it is where riders regroup before and after the climbs. The roads in every direction from Alte are quiet, well-surfaced, and demanding limestone interior riding. If you want to train seriously in this corner of the Algarve, there is nowhere better positioned.

Questions About Bike Rental in Alte

Yes. Alte and the surrounding barrocal quintas and guesthouses are within our delivery zone. For rural properties without a formal street address, send us a WhatsApp location pin and we will confirm logistics.

A 2km climb averaging 7.4% that sits immediately above the village on the road toward the Malhão plateau. It is a known benchmark on the central Algarve barrocal circuit. The Wall precedes the longer Malhão summit climb, which reaches over 500m. Most riders do it on the first morning to gauge where their legs are.

It is a small village with limited services — a few cafés, a market, and the Germano Bike Café which is well-stocked for cyclists. It is not a resort. Riders who base themselves here are here specifically for the cycling. Albufeira is 25km south for evenings out. Alte is the answer if you want the best barrocal roads from your front door.

It depends on what you are looking for. The altitude keeps mornings a few degrees cooler than the coast, but Alte has no beach, no resort infrastructure, and limited shade on the exposed Malhão plateau in the middle of the day. For serious training riders who want the best barrocal roads and are happy in a quiet village, it works year-round. If your trip includes family or non-cycling companions, a coastal base in summer is a better choice.
