The three routes built for The Serra are centred entirely on elevation. The Foia Summit Loop via the Alferce variant packs 1,060m of elevation into 47km — up the main road to the summit, down via the Alferce descent for a different technical challenge on the return. The Portimão Descent and Arade Valley return takes you down the Volta ao Algarve road to the coast and back via the river corridor — two climbing profiles in a single day. And the Silves and Arade Reservoir route connects the two Serra bases via the Odelouca dam on one of the most scenic inland roads in the western Algarve.

Up to the Foia summit at 902m via the main road from Monchique town, then down via the Alferce descent — a different road with a different technical character on the return. The Alferce descent runs through eucalyptus forest and is faster and more demanding than the ascent. From Monchique this is the definitive local benchmark — 1,060m in 47km. From Silves the approach via the Arade valley adds the Odelouca dam section, making it a significantly bigger day with the most scenic approach to the serra available from any base.

Down the Volta ao Algarve descent from Monchique toward Portimão — 25km of consistent gradient on the road that has determined professional race outcomes more than once. Reach Portimão, then climb back via the Arade river valley and Caldas de Monchique for the return. Two different climbing profiles in a single day. The descent-first structure makes this a different physical experience from the standard summit out-and-back, and riders who have done both consistently rate this version as the more complete day.

The connecting route between the two Serra bases — Monchique and Silves — via the Odelouca dam and the Arade reservoir. One of the most scenic inland roads in the western Algarve: the reservoir sits in forested hills with almost no traffic and the road surface is smooth throughout. From Monchique this is a full day descending to Silves and returning via a different road. From Silves it is the most scenic approach to Monchique — longer than the direct Portimão road but through countryside that earns every extra kilometre.

Monchique is the only base in the Algarve where you wake up inside a climb. The Foia road leaves the town centre and does not stop until the summit. I have ridden it many times and the upper section above the tree line — where the views open up to both coastlines on a clear day — never gets ordinary. Riders who want to do Foia from both directions on the same trip should base themselves here rather than on the coast.

As many as your legs allow. Most serious riders do it once in each direction — the main road and the Alferce variant — over the week. Adding the descent to Portimão and back gives a third distinct Foia experience.
From Monchique town, 8km at an average of around 7–8% to the 902m summit. The gradient is consistent with sections above 11%. The road is smooth, well-maintained, and carries almost no traffic outside of weekends.
Yes for dedicated riders. The Serra altitude means temperatures are several degrees cooler than the coast — comfortable for riding in the early morning. It is remote and quiet, which suits cyclists who are here specifically to train. For families or riders who want beach access in the afternoon, a coastal base is a better choice.
