Armação de Pêra is the western Central Coast base with Silves 22km north via Alcantarilha — the interior roads clear of resort traffic within a few kilometres of the beach. The three Central Coast routes cover the full range of terrain available from this position. The Wall and the Summit heads north through the limestone interior to the Wall of Alte at 7.4% and the Malhão plateau above 500m — the biggest day in the Central Coast set. The Moorish Capital goes northwest through the Arade valley to Silves for a measured day with a market stop. And the Clifftop Corridor heads east along the Falésia red sandstone clifftop toward Vilamoura — passed twice in both directions to soak in the views.

North through the interior to the medieval ruins at Paderne, then on through the limestone countryside to Alte — the Germano Bike Café is the natural stop before the main effort. The Wall of Alte is a 2km ramp averaging 7.4% that precedes the longer Malhão summit climb, where switchbacks carry you to over 500m. From Albufeira the interior is within 5km heading north through Ferreiras. From Vilamoura and Quarteira the approach adds the flat coastal section through Boliqueime. The most demanding day in the Central Coast set.

West through Algoz and Estômbar along the Arade river corridor to Silves, the Algarve's former Moorish capital. The hilltop castle is visible for kilometres before you arrive and the old town makes an excellent coffee stop before the return. The road surface between the coast and Silves is smooth and lightly trafficked throughout. Return via the interior hills north of Lagoa through citrus groves for a different road on the way back. A well-balanced day for when you want consistent riding without committing to a full summit effort.

Along the clifftop road above Falésia beach — red sandstone cliffs dropping into the Atlantic, one of the most visually striking short stretches of road on the central Algarve coast. From Albufeira the route heads east toward Vilamoura marina and along the cliff road. From Vilamoura it runs west toward Albufeira or east toward Quarteira. From Quarteira it covers the cliff and resort roads in both directions. Flat to gently rolling with excellent road surfaces throughout — the natural active recovery or easy effort in the Central Coast route set.

I like the approach to the Wall of Alte from Armação de Pêra for the extra interior kilometres — you arrive at the climb through the barrocal rather than from the coast, and the limestone country north of Alcantarilha is a different character from the Albufeira approach. The Arade valley loop to Silves from here is the most direct version of the Moorish Capital day and the road surface is consistently good throughout. A base that earns more consideration than it gets.

The Wall of Alte is approximately 45km north of Armação de Pêra via Alcantarilha and the limestone interior. The approach adds roughly 10km to the Albufeira starting point version but runs on quieter roads for most of the distance. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the full Wall and Summit day from this base.
Yes — Silves is 22km north via Alcantarilha and Estômbar. The Moorish Capital route uses this exact corridor. The Saturday morning market in Silves is the recommended version — plan to arrive by mid-morning for the best experience.
Both access the same three Central Coast routes. Armação de Pêra sits further west — slightly closer to Silves and slightly further from the Clifftop Corridor's eastern end at Vilamoura. For riders prioritising the Silves route and the Wall of Alte approach through quieter roads, Armação de Pêra is the more natural western base.
The Wall of Alte is a 2km climb above the whitewashed village of Alte in the limestone interior — averaging 7.4% with steeper sections at the opening. It is one of the most recognisable short climbs on the central Algarve route network and the gateway to the longer Malhão plateau above 500m. Stop at Germano BiciArte in the village before the climb begins.
The early morning hours are the best window for summer riding from any central coast base. The Clifftop Corridor east toward Vilamoura is the most manageable summer day — flat to gently rolling with sea air throughout. The Wall and Summit day should be started before 7am in July and August to reach the interior climbs before the midday heat builds on the exposed upper sections.
