Cycling in Alvor - Routes, Climbs, and What to Expect

Alvor sits 5km west of Portimão on the lagoon — a quieter Foia Corridor base with the same three routes as Portimão and a shorter approach to the interior. The lagoon and the old town give Alvor a distinct character off the bike. The Race Road heads north from the lagoon to the Foia summit at 902m on the Volta ao Algarve road — the most direct coastal access to the climb. Up One Side Down the Other adds the Alferce descent on the return for two completely different climbing profiles. And The River Capital takes the quieter western approach through the Odelouca reservoir to Silves for a measured day in contrast to the summit routes.

The Race Road
(Foia, Monchique, Portimão)

Challenging · 75km · 1,200m · 3-4 hrs

The most direct route from the Algarve coast to the Foia summit at 902m. North from Portimão through Mexilhoeira Grande and up the Arade valley foothills to Monchique, then the 16km climb. From Monchique town the gradient averages 4.9% with sections above 11%. The road is smooth, well-maintained, and almost traffic-free from Mexilhoeira Grande northward. The Volta ao Algarve professional race has used this as a decisive stage. Return via the same road or descend to Caldas de Monchique for a slightly different line home.

Up One Side, Down the Other
(Foia, Alferce, Monchique)

Challenging · 100km · 1,800m · 4-5 hrs

Ascend to the Foia summit via the main Portimão road, then descend via the Alferce variant — a different road on the return that runs through eucalyptus forest and is more technical than the ascent. Two distinct climbing profiles in a single day. The Alferce descent requires focused handling before the valley opens back toward the coast. For riders who want to experience the serra from both sides without repeating the same road, this is the most complete Foia Corridor day available from either Portimão or Alvor.

The River Capital
(Silves, Arade Valley, Lagoa)

Moderate · 75k-85m · 700m · 3–3.5 hrs

North from Portimão along the Arade river corridor to Silves, the Algarve's former Moorish capital. The road is smooth and lightly trafficked throughout. The hilltop castle is visible for kilometres before you arrive and the old town makes an excellent coffee stop. Return via the interior hills north of Lagoa through citrus groves for a different road on the way back. A more measured day for when the legs need variation without full rest — still 700m of climbing, but spread across rolling terrain rather than concentrated on a single summit.

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE

Alvor is one of those bases that surprises people. The lagoon and the old town give it a completely different feel from Portimão 5km east — quieter, more Portuguese, and with the roads north into the serra clearing of traffic immediately above the village. The Race Road to Foia from Alvor is cleaner than the Portimão approach because you avoid the marina traffic on the way out. And the River Capital through the Odelouca reservoir is one of the most scenic half-day routes in the western Algarve — a road most people drive past without realising what is on it.

I recommend Alvor to riders who want the Foia routes without the Portimão approach. The lagoon road north clears of traffic quickly and the old town has a genuinely local character that the marina does not. The River Capital from Alvor is one of my favourite moderate days in the western Algarve — the Odelouca reservoir appears through the trees on roads that are smooth and completely empty. Worth a half day of anyone's training week.

Questions About Bike Rental in Alvor

Does Velo Algarve deliver to Alvor?

Yes — Alvor is within our standard delivery zone. We deliver to villas, hotels, and resort accommodation anywhere in the Alvor and western Portimão area. Message us on WhatsApp if you want to confirm your address before booking.

The three Foia Corridor routes are identical from both bases. The approach from Alvor avoids the Portimão marina traffic on the way north. For riders based in the village rather than the resort hotels, the road north to Monchique begins almost immediately from the town centre. Portimão is the group hub with more restaurant and café options off the bike.

Yes — The River Capital heads north from Alvor past the Odelouca dam reservoir to Silves on one of the most scenic inland roads in the western Algarve. The reservoir sits in forested hills with smooth tarmac and almost no traffic. It is the most underrated day in the Foia Corridor set.

We recommend booking at least four weeks in advance, particularly for February through April when demand from training groups is highest. Group bookings of four or more bikes should book four to six weeks ahead. See veloalgarve.com/faq/ for more on availability.

Yes — we deliver to groups of any size across the Alvor and Portimão area. All bikes are pre-fitted to individual measurements before delivery. Message us on WhatsApp with your group size and dates and we will confirm availability and pricing for the full group.

From Alvor the Foia summit at 902m is approximately 30km north via Portimão and Monchique. The climb averages 7–8% for 8km from Monchique with ramps above 11% in the upper switchbacks. On a clear day the summit gives views to both coastlines. Most riders allow 3 to 4 hours for the full Race Road day from Alvor.
