Cycling in Burgau - Routes, Climbs, and What to Expect

Burgau sits 8km west of Lagos on the clifftop above its own bay — a quieter starting point for the Volta Circuit with the cliff coast road running in both directions from the village. The three Volta Circuit routes cover the full character of western Algarve riding from here. The cliff road east to Lagos then north to the Foia summit is the benchmark climbing day. The Wild West Coast run through Salema and Vila do Bispo to Cabo de São Vicente gives the lighthouse as a natural finish. And Both Sides of the Serra adds the Alferce descent on the return, making it a completely different day from the same starting point.

Edge of the Continent
(Cabo São Vicente, Sagres, Luz)

Moderate · 100km · 1150m · 3:30-4:30 hrs

North from Lagos through Bensafrim on quieter inland roads, then southwest to Vila do Bispo and Sagres on roads that carry considerably less traffic than the N125 coastal corridor. From Sagres the road heads west to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente — the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, with cliffs dropping 75m into the Atlantic. The return runs east on the cliff-top coastal road through Salema, Burgau, and Luz. The route puts the wind at your back on the way home.

The Summit Road
(Foia, Monchique, Arade)

Challenging · 95km · 1,400m · 3:30-4:30

North from Lagos through Portimão and up the Arade valley foothills to Monchique, then the 16km summit climb to Foia at 902m. The Volta ao Algarve professional race uses this road as a decisive stage. The main climb from Monchique town averages 4.9% with sections above 11%. On a clear day from the summit you can see both coastlines. Return via Caldas de Monchique or descend directly to Portimão. Start early and you are back at the hotel before the midday heat.

Both Sides of the Serra
(Foia, Alferce, Monchique, Portimão)

Challenging · 110km · 1800m · 4:30-5:30 hrs

Ascend to the Foia summit via the Portimão road, then descend via the Alferce variant — a completely different technical challenge through eucalyptus forest and small farms. The Alferce descent is faster and more demanding than the ascent, requiring focused handling before the valley opens back toward the coast. The most complete Volta Circuit day for riders who want to experience the serra from both sides without repeating a single stretch of road.

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE

Burgau is the quieter version of the Lagos starting point — the cliff road west to Sagres runs in both directions from the village, the bay below is one of the most sheltered on the western coast, and the approach to Foia takes you north through Bensafrim on roads that are almost empty by 7am. I ride out of Burgau regularly when I want the cliff lanes without the Lagos traffic on the way out of town. The descent back into the bay after the lighthouse run is one of those moments where you stop pedalling and just look.

Questions About Bike Rental in Burgau

Yes — Burgau is within our standard delivery zone. We deliver to villas, hotels, and accommodation anywhere in the Burgau area. If you are unsure whether your address is covered, message us on WhatsApp and we will confirm the same day.

The Foia summit at 902m is approximately 35km north of Burgau via Bensafrim and Monchique. The approach from Burgau joins the main Volta ao Algarve road near Bensafrim — a slightly longer approach than Lagos but on roads that are quiet and enjoyable from the first kilometre.

Yes — the cliff coast road west from Burgau runs through Salema and Vila do Bispo to Sagres. It is one of the most enjoyable sections of coastal road in the western Algarve — short punchy climbs above each bay with the Atlantic visible throughout. The lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente is the natural finish of the Land's End route.

For riders who want to avoid Lagos town traffic on the way out, Burgau is the better starting point. The cliff road west to Sagres and the approach north through Bensafrim both begin directly from the village. Lagos is the group hub with the widest choice of restaurants and services off the bike. For a training week focused purely on riding, Burgau suits riders who want to clip in and go immediately.

Every rental includes a pre-delivery fitting call, on-site bike fitting at delivery, a fully stocked saddle bag (TPU tubes, tyre plugs, spare SRAM batteries, mini electric pump, water bottles, gels), a radar light, and GPX routes.

The minimum rental period is 3 days. Pricing starts at €100 per day with discounts for longer rentals. See veloalgarve.com/pricing/ for the full pricing structure and duration discounts.
