Cycling in Aljezur - Routes, Climbs, and What to Expect

Aljezur is the northern Wild West Coast base — deep inside the Costa Vicentina natural park on the most remote cycling terrain in Portugal. The three Wild West Coast routes give their longest and most remote versions from here. KOYO, a specialty coffee roastery near Aljezur, is the natural café stop before heading south into the natural park. The Protected Coast runs south through the park to Carrapateira and the Bordeira lagoon on roads that carry almost no traffic. Land's End extends south all the way to Sagres and the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente. And Lighthouse to Lagos runs the full coastal connection east through Salema, Burgau, and Luz to Lagos.

Land's End
(Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres, Vila do Bispo)

Moderate · 56km · 675m · 2-3 hrs

Land's End runs west from Sagres to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente on the most south-westerly cycling roads in mainland Europe. The route is a round trip from the fortress: west to the lighthouse and back on the same exposed Atlantic headland road. 56km, 675m. Picnic Sagres is the pre-ride stop, Santo Loco the post-ride destination. Wind direction shapes both legs.

The Protected Coast
(Carrapateira, Bordeira, Costa Vicentina)

Moderate · 100km · 1000m · 4-5 hrs

The Protected Coast heads north from Sagres through Vila do Bispo and into the Costa Vicentina natural park to Carrapateira and the Bordeira beach lagoon — entirely inside the protected park boundary on roads that carry considerably less traffic than the main coastal corridor. Rolling clifftop terrain with Atlantic views throughout. The most remote day in the Wild West Coast set.

Lighthouse to Lagos
(Sagres, Salema, Burgau, Luz, Lagos)

Challenging · 95km · 1160m · 4-5 hrs

Lighthouse to Lagos starts in Sagres and runs east on the cliff-top coastal road through Salema, Burgau, and Luz to Lagos — the north-westerly at your back on the best section of the day. Stop at Everyday People in Lagos at the halfway point, then north on the quieter roads to avoid traffic before the N125 west to the lighthouse finish at Cabo de São Vicente.

I do not ride out of Aljezur as often as I should — and every time I do I wonder why not. The natural park south of town is unlike anything else in the Algarve. No traffic, no noise, no development on either side of the road. The Costa Vicentina in the morning light before the wind picks up is as pure a cycling experience as this coast offers. KOYO is worth the stop before you head south. Take the coffee seriously and take enough water.

Questions About Bike Rental in Aljezur

Does Velo Algarve deliver to Aljezur?

Yes — Aljezur is within our delivery zone. We cover the town and the surrounding natural park area. Message us on WhatsApp to confirm your specific accommodation address and we will confirm the same day.

The routes are the same roads but the starting point adds distance. From Aljezur the Protected Coast heads south through the natural park — this is the most direct version of that route from the northern base. Land's End and Lighthouse to Lagos both add approach kilometres from Aljezur compared to Sagres. The GPX files are pre-loaded at delivery and adjusted for your starting point.

KOYO is a specialty coffee roastery near Aljezur with freshly roasted coffee and light food — the natural pre-ride stop before heading south into the natural park. For longer rides, carry food from the start as services on the natural park roads are very limited. Take water wherever you see a shop open on the route.

Both. Solo riders who want genuinely remote cycling find Aljezur ideal — the natural park roads see almost nothing in terms of traffic. Groups of two or more have the advantage of company on the longer routes. The three Wild West Coast days from Aljezur are the longest versions available and suit riders who want maximum distance and isolation.

Aljezur is approximately 50km south of Sagres by the direct road or 60km via the natural park coast road. The natural park road south from Aljezur to Carrapateira and then to Sagres is the Protected Coast route — it is the most scenic way to connect the two bases and the road is excellent throughout.

Yes — the natural park roads are tarmac and well-maintained throughout. The protected area status keeps development minimal and the road surfaces in good condition. The main consideration is wind — the Atlantic north-westerly is consistent on the exposed sections and adds effort that does not show in the elevation numbers. Check the forecast and plan accordingly.
