Quick Answer

North along the Costa Vicentina clifftop from Sagres to Carrapateira and the Bordeira beach lagoon — entirely inside the natural park boundary on roads carrying considerably less traffic than the main coastal corridor. 100km, 1,000m, rolling clifftop terrain with Atlantic views throughout. From Aljezur this becomes a southern loop — the most complete Wild West Coast day available from the northern base.

Quick Overview

  • The Natural Park: The entire route runs inside the Costa Vicentina natural park boundary — the most intact stretch of Atlantic coastline in Portugal, protected from development on both sides of the road
  • Stop — KOYO (Aljezur): Specialty coffee roastery and café near Aljezur — freshly roasted coffee and light meals. The natural northern base stop before heading south into the natural park
  • Carrapateira: A small village at the edge of the natural park — the Bordeira beach lagoon just below is one of the most dramatic landscapes on the coast and worth a pause
  • Stop — Laundry Lounge (Sagres): Specialty coffee, fresh food, and a relaxed post-ride atmosphere in Sagres — the natural return stop for riders coming back from the natural park
  • The Roads: Quiet throughout — the natural park status keeps development and traffic minimal on every section of this route
  • Best season: February through May for the greenest conditions. Year-round on the clifftop road — summer mornings are pleasant before the wind builds

Inside the Natural Park — The Atlantic Coast at Its Most Intact

The Protected Coast is the Wild West Coast’s remote day. North from Sagres or Vila do Bispo along the Costa Vicentina clifftop to Carrapateira and the Bordeira beach lagoon — 100km, 1,000m, entirely inside the natural park on roads that carry considerably less traffic than anything on the main coastal corridor.

The landscape here is different from the southern coast: rawer, more exposed, and entirely untouched by the resort infrastructure that defines the Algarve elsewhere. From Aljezur the route becomes a southern loop — the most complete Wild West Coast day available from the northern base, with the option to continue all the way to Sagres and the lighthouse if the legs allow.

Route Profile

From Sagres head north on the coast road through Vila do Bispo toward Carrapateira. From Aljezur head south through the natural park — the roads are the same, the direction differs.

Stop — KOYO (Aljezur)

KOYO is a specialty coffee roastery and café near Aljezur — freshly roasted coffee and light meals in a calm, natural setting. The natural stop for riders based in Aljezur before heading south into the natural park, or on the return from Carrapateira. One of the best coffee stops in the northwest Algarve.

The Costa Vicentina

The natural park road north from Sagres to Carrapateira is consistently good tarmac with rolling terrain and Atlantic views for almost the full distance. The roads carry considerably less traffic than the main coastal approach — you can ride for long stretches without seeing another vehicle. The landscape is cork oak, cistus, and open headland throughout.

Carrapateira and the Bordeira Lagoon

Carrapateira village sits at the edge of the natural park with the Bordeira beach lagoon just below — one of the more dramatic natural landscapes on the Atlantic coast. Take a pause here before the return. The scale of the beach and the lagoon from the viewpoint above is worth the stop.

Return — Laundry Lounge (Sagres)

For riders returning to Sagres, the Laundry Lounge is the post-ride destination — specialty coffee, fresh food, and a relaxed atmosphere with live music on select evenings. One of the most characterful spots in the western Algarve and the right place to close the day after the natural park roads.

What You Will Need

  • Four gels minimum — carry food from the start as the natural park has minimal services between Sagres and Carrapateira
  • Two full bottles — refill at KOYO in Aljezur or Picnic Sagres before heading out
  • A gilet in winter — the Atlantic coast is exposed and the wind picks up from mid-morning in February and March
  • A wind forecast check — the clifftop sections are exposed and the wind shapes the effort on both legs

Best Time to Ride

February through May for the greenest conditions in the natural park. The coast is rideable year-round — summer mornings are pleasant on the clifftop road before the wind builds and the light in autumn is exceptional on the open headland sections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Costa Vicentina roads suitable for a road bike?

Yes — the main route roads within the natural park are tarmac and well-maintained throughout. The natural park designation means development is restricted, which keeps both the landscape and the road quality in good condition. Avoid any tracks signed as unpaved — those are not suitable for road bikes.

Is Carrapateira worth stopping in?

Yes — the Bordeira beach lagoon just below the village is one of the more dramatic natural landscapes on the coast and worth 10 to 15 minutes at the viewpoint. The village itself has a small café option. Allow time here before the return rather than treating it as a pass-through.

How does the route differ from Aljezur versus Sagres?

From Sagres the route heads north through Vila do Bispo to Carrapateira and back. From Aljezur the route heads south through the natural park to Carrapateira and can continue all the way to Sagres and the lighthouse for a bigger day combining Land’s End with the Protected Coast in one longer effort.

What is the wind like on the Protected Coast?

The north-westerly Atlantic wind is consistent on this coast. The headland sections between Sagres and Carrapateira are exposed and the wind can be strong from late morning. An early start gives the calmest window. The natural park roads offer some shelter in the valleys between the clifftop sections.

Is this route suitable for a rider staying in Salema?

Yes. From Salema head west toward Vila do Bispo and then north into the natural park — the approach adds roughly 15km to the Sagres starting point version. Salema sits on the coastal road between Sagres and Lagos and is well-positioned for both the Protected Coast and the Lighthouse to Lagos route.
