The Riding
What to pack for a cycling trip in the Algarve is a short list once the bike is handled: pedals if you want your own, shoes, helmet, your head unit, a second bottle, the gels and drink mix you train on, and the right kit for the month you are travelling in. No bike bag, no track pump, no toolkit, no spares. That removes roughly 20 to 25 kilograms from your luggage and, for most airlines, the entire bike carriage fee. Here is the full list, split by season.

The Non-Negotiables
1. Your shoes
We do not rent shoes, and you would not want us to. Cleat position is personal and a week is long enough for someone else’s setup to cause a knee problem. Bring your own with your cleats already where you like them.
2. Your helmet
Same reasoning. Fit and retention are worth more than convenience here, and a helmet you know is a helmet you will actually wear on the descent off Fóia.
3. Your GPS head unit
Bring the unit, leave the mount. Select Garmin or Wahoo when you book and the correct mount is fitted before the bike leaves the workshop. Your routes are sent across in advance, so they are on the unit before the bike reaches you.
4. Pedals, if you are particular
We stock Look KEO and Shimano SPD-SL and fit whichever you specify, so this one is optional. If you ride something else, or you simply prefer your own, bring them and we fit them at delivery.
5. A second bottle
One Elite Fly bottle comes on the bike. There is a cage for a second, and on the inland roads in summer you will want it. See where to refill water for why two bottles matters more here than at home.
6. Gels and drink mix, or buy them from us
One gel comes with the bike. For a week of riding you will want more, and you have two options. Bring what you train on, which is always the right call the night before your hardest day. Or buy gels and energy drink mix from us and have them delivered with the bike, which saves the pharmacy hunt on day one and keeps your luggage lighter. Tell your concierge what you use and we will match it as closely as we can.
Kit by Season
The Algarve is not one climate across the year, and the mornings are the thing visitors misjudge. A February morning in Monchique and a February afternoon on the coast are different rides.
December to February
Long bibs or bibs with leg warmers, long-sleeve base layer, a thermal or long-sleeve jersey, a packable rain shell, full gloves, and a gilet. Mornings can start around 8 to 10 degrees inland and afternoons reach the mid teens, so layers you can shed matter more than a single warm garment. Overshoes are worth the space if you are climbing to altitude.
March to May
The peak training window and the most awkward to pack for. Bring both: short bibs and a short-sleeve jersey for the afternoons, plus arm warmers, knee warmers, a gilet and a light shell for the mornings. Expect to start in three layers and finish in one.
June to September
Short bibs, lightweight jerseys, a cap under the helmet, and more sun cream than you think. A gilet still earns its place for the descent off Fóia, which is cool even in August. Two pairs of bibs minimum if you are riding daily, because they will not dry as fast as you expect in humid coastal air.
October and November
Back to the March pattern. Arm and knee warmers, a gilet, a shell in the bag. October is one of the best riding months of the year and one of the most commonly under-packed.
For the detail behind those months, the Algarve month by month sets out temperatures and wind properly.
What Not to Bring
- A track pump. There is a mini electric pump in the saddle bag on your bike and a workshop pump at delivery.
- Spare tubes and a multitool. Both are already under your saddle, checked before every delivery.
- A bike bag or box. This is the whole point. No airline fee, no oversized baggage desk, no reassembly in a hotel room, no wondering whether the derailleur hanger survived.
- A GPS mount. We fit the right one for your unit.
- Chain lube and cleaning kit. The bike is serviced before it reaches you and again after you return it.
For the full inventory of what arrives on the bike, see what is included with your bike.
The Things Riders Actually Forget
In rough order of how often we hear about it: sun cream, because people underestimate February sun at altitude. A spare pair of bibs, because one pair for six days does not work. Chamois cream. A phone mount or a plan for carrying the phone. And an EHIC or GHIC card, which is not cycling kit but is the one document people wish they had brought.
The other useful item is a small stuff sack for the gilet and arm warmers you will take off at 10am on almost every ride between March and May.
One More Thing Worth Sending
Not packing, but it belongs in the same list: your fit numbers. Five minutes with a tape measure before you fly means the bike arrives at your position rather than an approximation of it. Send us your fit numbers covers the three measurements that matter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do you need to pack for a cycling holiday if you are renting a bike?
Shoes with your own cleats, a helmet, your head unit, a second bottle, your usual gels and drink mix, and kit appropriate to the month. Pedals are optional since we stock Look KEO and Shimano SPD-SL. Leave the pump, tools, spares, mount and bike bag at home, all of which are handled.
Do I need to bring my own pedals?
Only if you want to. We stock Look KEO and Shimano SPD-SL and fit whichever you select when you book. If you ride a different system, or simply prefer your own pedals, bring them and we will fit them during the handover at your accommodation.
What should I wear cycling in the Algarve in February?
Long bibs or leg warmers, a long-sleeve base layer, a thermal jersey, full gloves, a gilet and a packable shell. Inland mornings can start around 8 to 10 degrees while coastal afternoons reach the mid teens, so layers you can remove matter more than one heavy garment.
How much luggage does renting a bike actually save?
Roughly 20 to 25 kilograms, plus the bike carriage fee most airlines charge, plus the oversized baggage desk at both ends. It also removes the reassembly at your accommodation and the question of whether anything was damaged in transit.
Do I need to bring a GPS mount?
No. Tell us whether you ride a Garmin or a Wahoo and the matching mount is fitted before the bike leaves the workshop. Bring the head unit itself, and the routes will already have been sent across so they are loaded before the bike arrives at your accommodation.
