Before You Fly
The Riding
Bike rental in the Algarve with delivery means the bike comes to you: no shop, no queue, no collection. With Velo Algarve, a Cervélo Soloist arrives at your accommodation already set up to your measurements, with your pedal system fitted and a stocked saddle bag under the seat. Between booking and collection there are five scheduled touchpoints and a WhatsApp thread that stays open the whole time. Here is the sequence, stage by stage, with the real timings we work to.
Table of Contents
Stage One: Booking
Booking takes a few minutes. You choose your frame size and pick your dates. The fleet is Cervélo Soloist in six frame sizes from 48 to 61, so there is a genuine size for most riders rather than a small, medium and large approximation.
We confirm every booking within two hours of receiving it. If your dates clash with an existing rental we contact you within two hours to sort out alternatives rather than leaving it hanging.
Two things worth knowing before you commit. Minimum rental is three days. And a security deposit of €1,000 per bike is authorised on your card at the time of booking, then released after the return inspection. No bike leaves the workshop without that authorisation in place.
Stage Two: Your Fit Numbers
Most of what we need is captured when you book: frame size, dates, your pedal system (Look KEO or Shimano SPD-SL, we stock both), and whether you ride a Garmin or a Wahoo so the right mount goes on the bike. That part takes a few minutes and you will not be asked for it twice.
What your concierge then asks for is your fit. Saddle height above everything, then saddle setback and reach if you have them. Those three numbers are the difference between a bike that arrives at your position and one that is adjusted around you on the pavement.
Saddle height is the one we will always ask for. If you send us your inseam we calculate a starting point from it at a factor of 0.883, then confirm and fine-tune with you in person at delivery. We never guess it, because it is the single biggest factor in whether a week on a rental bike is comfortable.
Measuring your own bike takes five minutes with a tape measure, and send us your fit numbers shows you exactly which three measurements to take and where. It is the most useful thing you can do before you fly.
The same thread is where to mention anything else that changes the setup: a specific saddle you ride, a knee that needs a particular position, the climbs you want to build the week around.
Stage Three: The Welcome Message
Once your fit is confirmed, you get a personal message, usually on WhatsApp. It confirms your delivery date, window and address, and it references your actual booking: the pedals we have fitted, the mount that is on the bike, the routes we have loaded, and a first suggestion based on what you said you wanted to ride.
That thread then stays open for the entire rental. It is the one channel for everything, and it reaches a person rather than a queue.
Stage Four: The Pre-Arrival Pack
Three days before delivery, a fuller pack lands by email. It confirms the delivery details and what to have ready, then adds the things a local would tell you:
- The weather forecast for your specific rental days, not a general seasonal average.
- Three routes chosen for your stated ability and the areas you said you wanted to ride.
- The mid-ride cafe stops worth planning around on those routes.
- A confirmed list of what is included, so there are no surprises at the door.
If you are building the week around specific efforts, the climbs worth planning around sets out what each one costs you, and structuring a five-day training block sets out how they fit together. The full set of routes sits on our route pages.
The pack is also the point at which the practical questions get answered. Most riders arrive through Faro, and getting from Faro to your hotel covers the four ways to do it and which one we recommend. Because the bike is handled, what to pack is a shorter list than you would expect, and the Algarve month by month tells you which version of that list applies.
Stage Five: Delivery and the On-Site Fit
On the morning of delivery the bike goes through a full pre-delivery check before it is loaded: frame and bolts, tyre pressures set to your weight, chain cleaned and lubricated, brakes checked, electronic shifting charged and run through every gear, saddle height pre-set to your inseam figure, correct pedals fitted, saddle bag stocked and pump tested. Then it is photographed from both sides and on the drivetrain, time-stamped, before it goes on the van. Nothing leaves with a known issue.
The handover itself takes 30 to 45 minutes. We are not dropping a bike and driving off:
- You sit on the bike and clip in, and we adjust saddle height, fore and aft, and bar reach until it is right.
- We walk through the electronic shifting, which lever does what and how to move between derailleurs.
- We check your own head unit sits properly in the mount we have fitted, and that the routes we sent are on it.
- We open the saddle bag, run through the mini electric pump, and explain that a tubeless tyre will often seal a small puncture itself.
- You ride 50 metres and come back, and we adjust again if anything is off.
Every rental includes the saddle bag kit (TPU tube, multitool, mini electric pump and a spare AXS battery), an Elite Fly bottle and a gel, and a Garmin or Wahoo mount fitted for your own head unit. Bring your helmet, your shoes and a second bottle if you want one. For the full breakdown of what sits on the bike and what to pack, see what is included with your bike.
Stage Six: The Riding Week and the Mid-Rental Check-In
The routes are the roads we ride: the clifftop lanes east of Carvoeiro, the Barrocal roads north to Silves, the N266 up through Monchique to Fóia at 902 metres, the flat run west from Lagos toward Sagres.
We check in during the rental rather than waiting to hear from you. On a rental of five days or more that lands on day three or four. On a three or four day rental it lands on day two. It is a real message asking how the riding is going and whether the saddle still feels right after a few hours on it, usually with a suggestion for a road you have not ridden yet.
If something is wrong, that is the point of the check-in. A saddle that felt fine on day one can be wrong by day three, and it is a ten minute fix if we hear about it on Wednesday.
For a mechanical problem, message the thread or call directly. Most roadside issues are solvable with what is already under your saddle. Beyond that we come to you, with on-site support or a replacement bike depending on where you are and how many days are left. You are never expected to sort a mechanical problem out on your own.
Off the bike, the same thread handles restaurant bookings, rest day ideas and the questions that come up in a town you do not know, including what to actually order at the cafe stop, which is less obvious than it looks and covered in how to order coffee in Portugal.
Stage Seven: Collection
We collect from the door. The inspection takes 20 to 30 minutes and happens with you present rather than after we have driven away: frame, drivetrain, brakes, tyres, wheels, and all the accessories checked off against the booking.
If there is no damage, we confirm the deposit release there and then. It is released within 24 hours of a clean return, and typically shows on your card within three to five working days. If something has been damaged, we photograph it with you standing there, and you hear the assessed cost within 24 hours rather than as a silent deduction weeks later.
Then the bike goes back to the workshop and is serviced before it goes out again. The fleet is replaced every season.
What We Do Not Do
Being specific about the limits is part of the service.
We are not a shop. There is no walk-in counter and no same-day hire, and the minimum is three days. We rent one bike per rider in six sizes, so your size can be unavailable in a busy week.
The Soloist is a road bike and the rental agreement is written that way: paved roads only. Gravel tracks, trails and beach paths are excluded, and damage from off-road use is chargeable in full. If you want a gravel bike, a mountain bike or an e-bike, we are the wrong company and will say so.
We do not sell insurance or pretend the deposit is one. You are liable for damage, loss or theft, assessed at the replacement cost of whatever was damaged. We recommend arranging your own personal accident, medical and travel cover before you ride, and we recommend wearing a helmet.
Cancellation terms are short and worth reading before you book: more than 14 days out, a full refund less processing fees; between 7 and 14 days, half the rental fee retained and the delivery fee returned in full; inside 7 days, no refund. Extensions are usually possible subject to availability and are agreed and paid in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when you rent a road bike from Velo Algarve?
Pedals and mount are set when you book. Your concierge then asks for your fit numbers, saddle height first, and sends a personal welcome message once they are confirmed, then a pre-arrival pack three days before delivery. The bike is delivered and fitted on site over 30 to 45 minutes, we check in mid-rental, and we collect from your door.
Is there a security deposit?
Yes, €1,000 per bike, authorised on your card at the time of booking rather than charged. It is released within 24 hours of a clean return inspection and normally reaches your account within three to five working days. No bike is delivered without the deposit successfully authorised.
What is included, and what costs extra?
Every rental includes the Cervélo Soloist, a saddle bag with TPU tube, multitool, mini electric pump and spare AXS battery, an Elite Fly bottle and a gel, and a Garmin or Wahoo mount for your head unit. Bring your own helmet, shoes and head unit. Delivery is charged separately from the daily rate.
What if something goes wrong mid-ride?
Message your concierge or call the rental line. Most roadside problems are solvable with the kit already under your saddle, and a tubeless tyre will often seal a small puncture on its own without you stopping. For anything more, we provide on-site support or a replacement bike depending on your location and the days remaining.
Can I take the bike on gravel or trails?
No. The Soloist is set up for paved roads, and the rental agreement excludes gravel, trails, beach paths and other unpaved surfaces. Damage caused by off-road riding is chargeable in full. If your trip needs a gravel bike, we would rather tell you that than send the wrong bike.
Book Your Bike: check availability and book a bike here, and your concierge will be in touch for your fit numbers once it is confirmed.
