Road bike tours in the Algarve with Velo Algarve work with or without bike rental: take the tour with a pre-fitted Cervélo Soloist delivered to your door, or ride your own bike and we quote the day without it. If you have not flown a bike out, take the rental. It is the simpler day by a distance.

Our guided cycling tours in the Algarve are private rides, not scheduled group departures. I guide every one myself. The route is built around where you are staying and how far you want to go, from 60 km before lunch to an epic 150 km through the mountains, with a café stop on the way.

Key Takeaways

  • Two paths: tour plus a rental Cervélo Soloist, or tour on your own bike.
  • Every tour is private. Most days it is one rider and one guide, and the maximum is six riders per guide.
  • Rides run from about 60 km to 150 km, anywhere between Lagos and Tavira, with a café coffee and snack included.
  • Every day is quoted individually on WhatsApp. Riding your own bike, the day is quoted without the Cervélo.
  • Three to four weeks’ notice is comfortable, especially in spring and autumn.

What a Guided Ride Actually Involves

The day starts at your door. If you are taking the rental option, the bike arrives at your hotel or villa already set to your saddle height, with your pedals fitted, and I check the fit with you before we roll out. You will have had the GPX file in advance, so you know the route and the climbs before the day.

Then we ride. The pace is yours: a steady 60 km along the coast with a long lunch, or a full mountain day over Fóia and the Serra de Monchique. There is a support van on the route, and a stop at a local café for coffee and something to eat is part of the day. I have ridden these roads for three years and I choose the café the same way I choose the climbs: because it is worth stopping for.

At the end, the bike is packed away and collected. You bring your helmet, shoes, kit and sun cream. Helmets and shoes can be arranged if you ask when booking.

Plan my ride

Option One: Road Bike Tour with Bike Rental

This is the path for most people who come to us for a tour. You are in the Algarve for a holiday, a wedding or a week at a villa in Vale do Lobo, and you have not brought a bike. You want one good day on proper roads, on a proper bike, without spending the morning at a hire shop.

The bike is a current-season Cervélo Soloist, a full carbon aero road bike with SRAM Force eTap AXS wireless shifting and a power meter, in sizes from 48 to 61. It comes with tools, a spare tube, a mini electric pump, a spare battery, a bottle and a gel. The full spec is on the full fleet spec page.

If you want more than one day on the bike, a guided day works well inside a longer rental. Our road bike rental in the Algarve guide covers the multi-day option, and you can book the bike here and add a guided day on WhatsApp.

Option Two: Road Bike Tour Without a Rental Bike

If you have brought your own bike, I will guide you on it and the day is quoted without the Cervélo. This suits riders on a longer stay with their own bike already here, and anyone who simply prefers their own position and gearing for a big day.

A few things are worth doing before a guided day on your own bike. Have it checked after the flight, with the gears indexed and the brakes bedded in. Carry a spare derailleur hanger for your frame, because nobody in the Algarve will have your exact one on a Sunday. And fit tyres that suit the roads: the Algarve’s back lanes are rougher than the coast road, and 28 mm or wider is a comfortable choice.

How This Compares with Other Guided Rides in the Algarve

Scheduled guided days in the central Algarve are advertised from around €120 for a half day and €160 for a full day, usually from a fixed meeting point, with bike hire charged on top. That format works well if you want a set group and a set route.

Ours is built differently. There are no scheduled departures, so the ride starts from where you are staying, on the route you want, at your pace. Most days it is one rider and one guide. For a couple, a small club group or a rider marking a birthday on the Fóia, that is the difference that matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a guided road bike tour in the Algarve without renting a bike?

Yes. You can ride a Velo Algarve guided tour on your own bike. Brad guides you on it and the day is quoted without the Cervélo rental. Have the bike checked after the flight, carry a spare derailleur hanger, and bring your own helmet, shoes and kit, as you would for any tour.

What is included in a guided road bike tour with bike rental?

A guided tour with bike rental includes Brad as your guide for the whole ride, a pre-fitted Cervélo Soloist with your pedals, the GPX file in advance, tools, spare tube, mini electric pump, spare battery, a bottle and gel, a café coffee and snack, a support van, and delivery and collection.

How much does a road bike tour in the Algarve cost?

Every Velo Algarve tour is quoted individually, because distance, group size, start point and whether you need a bike all change the day. Send your dates, where you are staying and how far you want to ride on WhatsApp, and you will get a quote. Riding your own bike, the Cervélo is left off.

How far in advance should I book a guided road bike tour?

Book three to four weeks ahead for a guided road bike tour in the Algarve. Tours are private and guided by Brad himself, so dates fill in spring and autumn. Shorter notice sometimes works outside peak season, so it is worth asking on WhatsApp even if your trip is sooner.

How long are the guided rides?

Guided rides run from about 60 km to 150 km. A shorter day might be 60 km along the coast before lunch. A long day can cover 150 km through the Serra de Monchique. The route is built around your preferences and where you are staying, anywhere between Lagos and Tavira.
