Our guided cycling tours in the Algarve are single days rather than packaged holidays. We bring a Cervélo Soloist fitted to your measurements to wherever you are staying, I ride with you for the day on a route built around what you want, we stop at a café I actually use, and at the end I pack the bike away and take it with me. You bring a helmet and shoes.

Rides run from around 60 km to 150 km, and the route is decided by you rather than by a printed itinerary. Full detail on the service is on our private cycling tours page. Most of what else is available in the Algarve is a seven-day package with hotels attached. This is the other thing: one very good day on the bike with someone who lives here.

Key Takeaways

  • Tours are guided by me personally rather than a rotating team, on roads I have ridden across two years of living here.
  • Ride length runs from around 60 km to 150 km, and routes are built per booking around where you are staying and what you want from the day.
  • The bike comes fitted to your measurements and is collected at the end, so there is nothing to arrange before or after.
  • Bring your own helmet and shoes. Everything else, including the bike, routes and café stop, is handled.
  • Book three to four weeks ahead, and message us on WhatsApp for a quote rather than picking from a price list.
  • See the private cycling tours page for how the day is put together and what is covered.

What the Day Actually Looks Like

We start with a message rather than a booking form. You tell me where you are staying, roughly how far you want to ride, what you ride at home and what you want out of the day, and I put a route together from that.

On the morning, I arrive at your accommodation with the bike already built and set to your measurements: saddle height, saddle fore and aft, your pedal system and tyre pressures for your weight. The handlebar and stem come as the bike is built, so if you ride a very particular front-end position, tell me when we are planning and I will be straight with you about what I can match.

Then we ride. Somewhere in the middle we stop for coffee, and it will be somewhere I use rather than somewhere that pays commission. At the end of the day I pack the bike into the van and take it away. There is no drop-off, no cleaning, and nothing waiting for you the next morning.

The Routes: Built Around You

There is no fixed catalogue. The route gets built per booking, and the three things that decide it are where you are staying, how far you want to go and whether you came here to climb.

At the shorter end, around 60 km, a day might take in the coast road west from Lagos through Burgau and Salema, or the flat estate roads and lagoon edges around Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. In the middle, 80 to 100 km, the Arade valley to Silves and the castle, or the Barrocal roads north of Loulé toward Querença and Salir. At the long end, up to 150 km, the Foia summit at 902 metres, both sides of the Serra de Monchique, or the run out to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente.

If you want a sense of the terrain before we talk, the cycling routes across the Algarve page covers the network we ride, and every route there is free to download whether you book a tour or not.

Who It Suits

It works best for three sorts of rider.

Someone already here on holiday, with a few free days and no interest in committing a week to a packaged tour. A rider who wants the good roads without spending the first two days finding them by trial and error. And a small group, friends or a couple, who would rather ride with one person who knows the roads than join a fixed group ride at a fixed pace.

It is less suited to anyone wanting a full multi-day holiday with hotels and luggage transfers arranged. Multi-day tours are possible, and a few people do book them, but one-day rides are what we mostly do and what we do best.

What Is Included and What to Bring

  • Included: a Cervélo Soloist fitted to your measurements, delivery to your accommodation and collection at the end, a guided route built for the day, and a café stop.
  • Included on the bike: SRAM Force AXS electronic shifting, a power meter crankset, bottles and a stocked saddle bag with tubes, plugs and a pump.
  • Bring: your own helmet and cycling shoes. Tell us your cleat standard, Look Keo or Shimano SPD-SL, when we are planning.
  • Bring: kit for the conditions, sunglasses and sun cream. In summer, plan on an early start, and in winter a gilet for the descents.

How This Differs From a Packaged Tour

Most guided cycling in the Algarve is sold as a multi-day holiday: seven or eight days, hotels included, a set itinerary, often in a group of a dozen or more. Those trips are good at what they do, and if you want your whole week organised, book one.

What we run is narrower on purpose. One day, one small group, a route drawn up for you, and a guide who owns the business rather than works a season for it. There is no printed price because the day is different every time: the distance, the terrain, where you are staying and how many of you there are all change what it costs. So we quote rather than publish.

Booking and Lead Time

Message us on WhatsApp with the dates you are here, where you are staying, how many riders, roughly how far you want to go, and what you ride at home. We will come back with a route suggestion and a price for the day. The private cycling tours page sets out what a day covers before you message.

Three to four weeks ahead is the right lead time. It gives us room to have the right frame size ready and to build a route that suits the group rather than defaulting to something generic. Shorter notice is worth asking about, particularly outside February to April, though the answer depends on what is already booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in a Velo Algarve guided cycling tour?

A Cervélo Soloist fitted to your measurements, delivered to your accommodation and collected at the end of the day, a route built around what you want to ride, a guide who rides with you, and a café stop along the way. You bring your own helmet and cycling shoes, and the private cycling tours page lists the full inclusions.

How long are the guided rides?

Anywhere from around 60 km to 150 km. The distance is agreed with you when the route is planned, alongside how much climbing you want. Shorter coastal days and full days over the Serra de Monchique are both regular requests, so the length follows the rider rather than a fixed itinerary.

How far in advance should I book a guided cycling tour in the Algarve?

Three to four weeks ahead is the recommended lead time. That allows for the right frame size to be reserved and a route to be built around your group. Shorter notice is sometimes possible, particularly outside the busy February to April training season, so it is worth asking.

How much does a guided cycling tour cost?

There is no published price, because each day is quoted individually. Distance, terrain, group size and where you are staying all affect the cost. Message us on WhatsApp with those details and we will come back with a route suggestion and a price for the day.

Do I need to bring my own bike or equipment?

No bike. It is delivered fitted to your measurements and collected afterwards. Bring a helmet and your own cycling shoes, and tell us whether you ride Look Keo or Shimano SPD-SL cleats so the pedals are fitted before the bike arrives.
