The best cycling routes in Monchique all start with the same fact: the town sits at around 450m on the flank of Fóia, at 902m the highest point in the Algarve, so every ride here is a climbing ride. The three we send riders on most are the Benchmark Summit (65km, 1,500m), Down the Race Road to Portimão and back (90km, 1,500m) and the Reservoir Road to Silves (115km, 1,900m). Add the long Fóia ascent from Caldas de Monchique, the Marmelete loop on the N267 and the short, sharp Alferce climb, and you have a week of riding in the Serra de Monchique without repeating a road.

Below are the seven routes, starting with the three on our own route network, with distance, climbing and the one thing you need to know about each.

The Best Road Cycling Routes in Monchique

1. The Benchmark Summit (65km, 1,500m)

The ride that defines the Serra. The Benchmark Summit route goes straight up Fóia from Monchique with fresh legs: around 8km to 902m, averaging roughly 7%, with ramps above 11% in the upper switchbacks. The road tilts up as you leave town and does not let go. After the descent, a valley loop through eucalyptus and cork oak finishes the climbing. Distinguishing fact: at roughly 23m of climbing per kilometre, it has the highest elevation density of any route on our network. Allow 3-4 hours.

2. Down the Race Road (90km, 1,500m)

Down the Race Road drops 25km and about 450m of altitude from Monchique to Portimão on the road the Volta ao Algarve uses, then climbs home a different way through the Arade valley. The descent is smooth, well-surfaced tarmac with light traffic in the morning. The return is 30-35km of gradual climbing that takes most riders 1.5-2 hours. Distinguishing fact: no section is ridden twice. Taberna do Manel, the honey café near Mexilhoeira Grande, is the stop at around 35km. Allow 4-5 hours.

3. The Reservoir Road (115km, 1,900m)

The big day. The Reservoir Road heads south past the Odelouca reservoir, forested hills and water through the trees and almost no traffic, to turn at Silves under its red sandstone castle. The Mercado Municipal and the old-town pastry shops are the refuel. Distinguishing fact: the climb from Silves back to Monchique is one of the hardest in the Algarve, not because it is steep but because it is long and arrives after 60-70km. Do not leave Silves under-fuelled. Allow 5-6 hours.

4. Fóia From Caldas de Monchique (16.4km, 795m)

The long way up. Start in the spa village of Caldas de Monchique at around 240m and climb the N266 through Monchique town to the summit. Climbfinder lists this ascent at 16.4km and 795m of gain, averaging 4.9% with a steepest 100m at 11.1%. The first 7km to Monchique are steady, around 200m of height; the real work starts in town. Distinguishing fact: Climbfinder ranks it first in the Algarve for total elevation gain on a single climb. The one to do if you are training for a long alpine col.

5. The Marmelete Loop via the N267 (70-80km, 1,200-1,400m)

West from Monchique, the N267 runs along the ridge towards Marmelete and on to Aljezur. Looping back via Fóia or via Casais gives 70-80km with 1,200-1,400m of climbing, depending on the variation. Komoot’s most-ridden version, Fóia to Marmelete, is 71.6km with 1,180m. Distinguishing fact: this is the quietest road in the Serra. Marmelete has a café and a shop, and the longer variations take in views west to Praia da Amoreira on the Atlantic coast.

6. The Alferce Climb (1.6km at 9%)

Short, steep and on the east side of the Serra. myCols lists the Alferce climb at 1.6km, 144m of gain, an average of 9% and a maximum of 10.4%. It is rarely a ride on its own; fold it into the Reservoir Road or a loop towards Silves for a hard effort in the middle of a long day. Distinguishing fact: the climb featured on stage 2 of the 2018 Volta ao Algarve.

7. Monchique From the Coast (around 90km)

If you are staying between Lagos and Portimão, you do not need to drive to Monchique to ride it. Pedal Portugal’s Monchique day ride starts at Mexilhoeira Grande, climbs the N266 through Caldas de Monchique to town, crosses to Marmelete on the N267 and drops back past Barragem da Bravura. Around 93km, and you can add the 14km round trip to the Fóia summit. Distinguishing fact: the first 15km are almost flat, so it is the gentlest way to put 1,500m into your legs.

What to Know Before You Ride in the Serra de Monchique

  • Start early. The upper Fóia road is exposed. Mornings are cooler in summer and clearer in winter, when the summit can sit in cloud by early afternoon.
  • Pack a layer. The summit is 900m higher than the coast and noticeably colder and windier. The descent to Monchique is 8km of it.
  • Fuel for the climbing, not the distance. Six gels and two full bottles for the Benchmark Summit and Race Road. More for the Reservoir Road.
  • Know the café hours. Velochique on Monchique’s main square opens at 9:00 and is closed on Tuesdays. Plan the finish around it.
  • Descend with care on the N266. It is the main road between Portimão and Monchique and carries more traffic than the N267.
