Cycling in SALEMA - Routes, Climbs, and What to Expect

Salema is the fishing village midpoint between Lagos and Sagres — a quiet base on the cliff coast with the Wild West Coast routes accessible in both directions from the door. The coastal road runs east through Burgau and Luz to Lagos and west through Vila do Bispo toward Sagres and the lighthouse. The three Wild West Coast routes cover the most exposed cycling terrain in Portugal from here. Land's End heads west to Cabo de São Vicente on the Atlantic headland road. The Protected Coast goes north through the Costa Vicentina natural park to Carrapateira. And Lighthouse to Lagos runs east on the cliff coast to Lagos with a stop at Everyday People before the return west to the lighthouse finish.

Land's End
(Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres, Vila do Bispo)

Moderate · 56km · 675m · 2-3 hrs

Land's End runs west from Sagres to the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente on the most south-westerly cycling roads in mainland Europe. The route is a round trip from the fortress: west to the lighthouse and back on the same exposed Atlantic headland road. 56km, 675m. Picnic Sagres is the pre-ride stop, Santo Loco the post-ride destination. Wind direction shapes both legs.

The Protected Coast
(Carrapateira, Bordeira, Costa Vicentina)

Moderate · 100km · 1000m · 4-5 hrs

The Protected Coast heads north from Sagres through Vila do Bispo and into the Costa Vicentina natural park to Carrapateira and the Bordeira beach lagoon — entirely inside the protected park boundary on roads that carry considerably less traffic than the main coastal corridor. Rolling clifftop terrain with Atlantic views throughout. The most remote day in the Wild West Coast set.

Lighthouse to Lagos
(Sagres, Salema, Burgau, Luz, Lagos)

Challenging · 95km · 1160m · 4-5 hrs

Lighthouse to Lagos starts in Sagres and runs east on the cliff-top coastal road through Salema, Burgau, and Luz to Lagos — the north-westerly at your back on the best section of the day. Stop at Everyday People in Lagos at the halfway point, then north on the quieter roads to avoid traffic before the N125 west to the lighthouse finish at Cabo de São Vicente.

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE

Salema is the fishing village that sits in the gap between the two coasts — half an hour from Lagos, half an hour from Sagres, and right on the cliff road that connects them. I ride through Salema regularly on the Lighthouse to Lagos route and it always feels like the moment the western Algarve opens up — you come over the hill from Burgau and the bay is below you and the Atlantic is ahead. The road west toward Vila do Bispo is one of the quieter sections of the western coast and the approach to the Bordeira lagoon from Salema is as good a morning's riding as I know.

Salema is where the western Algarve feels most itself. The fishing boats in the bay, the cliff road in both directions, and the lighthouse visible on a clear day from the high points west of the village. The three Wild West Coast routes from here give the most balanced access of any base in the group — Lagos in one direction, Sagres in the other, and the natural park north. I ride through here often and it never gets old.

Questions About Bike Rental in SALEMA

Does Velo Algarve deliver to Salema?

Yes — Salema is within our standard delivery zone. We deliver to villas, guesthouses, and holiday accommodation in Salema and the surrounding area. Message us on WhatsApp to confirm your specific address.

Yes — all three Wild West Coast routes are accessible from Salema. Land's End heads west via Vila do Bispo to the lighthouse. The Protected Coast goes north through Vila do Bispo into the natural park. Lighthouse to Lagos runs east through Burgau and Luz — Salema sits almost exactly at the midpoint of this route. The GPX files for all three are pre-loaded on the Garmin at delivery.

It depends on which routes you are prioritising. Sagres is the most direct base for Land's End and the Protected Coast. Salema sits midway between Lagos and Sagres — making it the most natural base for Lighthouse to Lagos and giving roughly equal access to all three routes. For riders who want variety without moving base, Salema is the most flexible position.

The cliff road west from Salema through Figueira and Vila do Bispo to Sagres is exposed to the Atlantic north-westerly for most of its length. The short punchy climbs above each bay can be harder than the gradient suggests when the wind is against you. Check the forecast before setting out — the same road with the wind at your back is one of the most enjoyable sections in the western Algarve.

Three days minimum. This works well for the Wild West Coast set — three routes, three days, one base. Duration discounts apply from 5 days. See veloalgarve.com/pricing/.

Yes — Salema works well for small groups of four to eight riders who want a quiet village base with immediate access to the Wild West Coast routes. We deliver to groups of any size. Message us on WhatsApp with your group numbers and dates and we will confirm availability across the group.
