Cycling in Portimão - Routes, Climbs, and What to Expect

The three routes built for the Foia Corridor are centred on what makes Portimão and Alvor exceptional: the most direct access from the Algarve coast to Foia. The Foia Summit route is the Volta ao Algarve climb in its most direct form — north through the Arade foothills to Monchique, then 16km to 902m. The Monchique Circuit extends that day by taking the Alferce descent on the return, linking both sides of the serra in a single ride. And the Arade Valley and Silves route uses the river corridor to reach the Moorish capital on smooth, quiet roads — a more measured day when the legs need variety.

The Race Road
(Foia, Monchique, Portimão)

Challenging · 75km · 1,200m · 3-4 hrs

The most direct route from the Algarve coast to the Foia summit at 902m. North from Portimão through Mexilhoeira Grande and up the Arade valley foothills to Monchique, then the 16km climb. From Monchique town the gradient averages 4.9% with sections above 11%. The road is smooth, well-maintained, and almost traffic-free from Mexilhoeira Grande northward. The Volta ao Algarve professional race has used this as a decisive stage. Return via the same road or descend to Caldas de Monchique for a slightly different line home.

Up One Side, Down the Other
(Foia, Alferce, Monchique)

Challenging · 100km · 1,800m · 4-5 hrs

Ascend to the Foia summit via the main Portimão road, then descend via the Alferce variant — a different road on the return that runs through eucalyptus forest and is more technical than the ascent. Two distinct climbing profiles in a single day. The Alferce descent requires focused handling before the valley opens back toward the coast. For riders who want to experience the serra from both sides without repeating the same road, this is the most complete Foia Corridor day available from either Portimão or Alvor.

The River Capital
(Silves, Arade Valley, Lagoa)

Moderate · 75k-85m · 700m · 3–3.5 hrs

North from Portimão along the Arade river corridor to Silves, the Algarve's former Moorish capital. The road is smooth and lightly trafficked throughout. The hilltop castle is visible for kilometres before you arrive and the old town makes an excellent coffee stop. Return via the interior hills north of Lagoa through citrus groves for a different road on the way back. A more measured day for when the legs need variation without full rest — still 700m of climbing, but spread across rolling terrain rather than concentrated on a single summit.

Velo Algarve

RIDING THE ROADS OF THE ALGARVE

Portimão sits at the southern end of the Foia Corridor — the most direct route from the Algarve coast to the 902m Foia summit. The Volta ao Algarve professional race has used this road as a decisive stage climb, and the gradient profile from the Arade valley foothills to the summit has ended more than a few races. From the marina north, the traffic drops away within 10km and the road stays quiet all the way to Monchique.

The road from Portimão marina north toward Monchique is the one I know best in the Algarve. Past Mexilhoeira Grande the traffic drops away and the gradient begins — steady at first, building through the Arade foothills to Monchique town. From there the Foia road is 16km of proper climbing. The descent back to Portimão on the Volta ao Algarve road is 25km of fast, consistent gradient that rewards a controlled pace. I have ridden it many times and it does not get old.

Questions About Bike Rental in Portimão

Do you deliver to Praia da Rocha and Alvor?

Yes — both are within our standard Portimão delivery zone. Praia da Rocha is the main beach resort area directly south of Portimão town, and Alvor is a short distance to the west. Confirm your accommodation address at booking and we will arrange a time that works with your arrival.

Yes. Ferragudo, just across the Arade estuary from Portimão, and Carvoeiro to the east are both within our delivery area. If you are staying anywhere in that corridor, you are covered. Message us on WhatsApp if you want to confirm your specific address before booking.

Yes — Monchique and the Foia climb are approximately 25km north of Portimão. Most riders head out through the Arade valley and reach Monchique town before the climb itself begins. It is a full-day ride from Portimão and back. The climb gains around 450m over roughly 8km from Monchique, with the summit at 902m.

Yes. The coastal loop through Alvor and around the Ria de Alvor estuary is flat, quiet, and excellent for recovery rides or easier days. The EN125 corridor west towards Lagos is also fast and well-surfaced. Portimão has good options for every type of day, not just mountain days.

March through June and September through November are ideal — reliable dry weather, temperatures that suit hard riding, and much less traffic than the summer peak. July and August are warm and busy on the coastal roads. The Volta ao Algarve professional race runs through the region every February, which gives a sense of how rideable the winter is here.

Every bike comes with a fully equipped saddle bag for roadside fixes. For anything beyond that, message your concierge on WhatsApp and we will come to you or arrange a replacement bike depending on your location and the remaining days of your rental.
