This is the classic Portimão road cycling loop and the one most riders come back to repeatedly. Head north out of town and the road loosens up through quiet farmland along the Arade valley, with the Monchique peaks visible ahead. Pass through or stop in Silves — the medieval castle is hard to miss from the road — before turning north towards Monchique. From there the Foia climb is roughly 8km at an average 7% gradient, summiting at 902m. The descent back to the coast is fast, sweeping, and very satisfying. Allow a full day.
For a shorter, flatter day, the coastal loop west from Portimão through Alvor and back along the Ria de Alvor estuary is one of the most pleasant rides in the western Algarve. The roads through Alvor village are quiet and the estuary views are a genuine highlight. This is the right ride for a recovery day, an early-season opener, or guests who want to ride without structured training pressure.
The EN125 west towards Lagos is well-surfaced and fast — useful for tempo intervals. Most riders pair it with the quieter inland return via Mexilhoeira Grande and Odiáxere, which cuts the traffic significantly and adds a small amount of rolling climbing on the way back.
Portimão suits a wide range of cyclists. The Monchique circuit makes it a legitimate training base for serious riders targeting the Foia climb. The coastal loops make it equally viable for holiday cyclists who want good roads without committing to a full mountain day. It is also a natural base for riders with a broader motorsport interest — the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, which hosted Formula 1 and MotoGP, sits just north of the city and is a landmark most cycling visitors make a point of riding past.
Coastal routes, Atlantic climbs, and café stops that make this the most popular training base in the Algarve.
A well-connected base with quick access to coastal runs and the inland roads towards Silves.
