The 50km run from Lagos south-west to Sagres along the EN268 and EN125 is the signature ride of the western Algarve. Clifftop roads, open Atlantic views, almost no traffic once you clear the town, and a genuine sense of riding towards the end of Europe. Most riders do it as a 100km out-and-back. The headwind on the return is real — plan your fuel accordingly.
The ascent to Foia via Monchique is the benchmark climb of the Algarve. The climb itself is roughly 8km from Monchique, gaining around 450m to a summit that sits at 902m above sea level — the highest point in the region and a regular stage finish on the Volta ao Algarve. It is not a beginner route. It is the route that defines what a week of training in the western Algarve can look like when you come back to it a second time knowing you can go faster.
If you want a recovery ride or an easier day, the inland roads west and north of Lagos through Bensafrim and into the Barrocal offer genuinely quiet tarmac with almost no motor traffic. Rolling terrain, eucalyptus and cork oak, and the kind of silence that is hard to find anywhere near a tourist town.
Lagos is best suited to cyclists who are here to train. The route variety is exceptional, the road quality is good, and the western Algarve has enough climbing to reward riders who came specifically to push their numbers. It also works well for gran fondo preparation — the Foia ascent and the Sagres loop together represent a serious training week. Resort guests who want a scenic day ride will find the coastal corridor easy enough to enjoy without a structured programme.
Access to the Monchique climb, the Arade valley circuit, and the best flat-to-technical mix in the western Algarve.
